2016 American Gold Eagles are part of the American Eagle bullion coin program from the United States Mint. Consisting of gold and silver coins in bullion, proof, and burnished versions, as well as a platinum bullion and proof option, the American Eagles are the best sellers at the US Mint annually. Right now, the 2017 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin is available to purchase from Chase Metals.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in an individual plastic flip or mint tubes of 40 coins.
  • 31st annual release of the American Gold Eagle Series.
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of actual gold content in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of $10 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Obverse features the image of Liberty.
  • Family of nesting bald eagles on the reverse.

The American Gold Eagle coin debuted in 1986 as a bullion coin with four weights available. These included a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/10 oz weight in addition to the 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle. Interestingly enough, the Proof American Gold Eagle also debuted that year, but only in a 1 oz weight.

Proof American Gold Eagles were rolled out in phases over the first three years of availability. The 1/2 oz coin was introduced in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. All 2017 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are now struck at the West Point Mint facility, and have been since 2001.

Each 2017 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin in this listing is in BU condition. Coins in this condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice a range of minor flaws that include breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.

On the obverse of all American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Liberty. Created in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens, he never actually lived to see his creation reach circulation on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin. He died just months before the coins went into production after complications from an illness.

The reverse of the 2017 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin features a family of bald eagles congregating around their nest. As a group of hatchlings rest inside the nest a mother eagle stands guard. Meanwhile, a male is depicted returning to the nest with an olive branch. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for the exclusive use of the American Gold Eagle series.

The United States Mint has assigned production of American Gold Eagles to various mints over the years, but currently the bullion and proof versions of the coin are struck at the West Point Mint along with most of the American Silver Eagle coins produced annually.
