The obverse features the profile of an American Indian, dating back to the original 1913 James Earle Fraser design. Fraser explains the profile as a composite of three different chiefs, each being from one of the American tribes, Big Tree, Iron Tall and Two Moons.
On the reverse is a majestic American Bison. Contrary to popular belief, this is actually a specific bison who inhabited the New York Central Park Zoo in the 1910s. His name was Black Diamond, and Fraser reportedly needed an assistant to keep the bison distracted in order to get the perfect angle for the illustration.
